The new biopic Michael, based on the life of late pop icon Michael Jackson, has sparked intense debate among critics, with many describing the film as a “whitewash” that presents a sanitised version of the singer’s life and legacy.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in his acting debut as the King of Pop. The cast also includes Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, and Miles Teller as entertainment lawyer John Branca.
The story follows Jackson’s rise from his early days with the Jackson 5 in Gary, Indiana, through to his global superstardom as a solo artist. Much of the film focuses on his music career and iconic performances, with Jackson’s original vocals used throughout the musical sequences.
Critics, however, say the film avoids addressing the more controversial aspects of his life. Several reviewers described it as “sanitised,” arguing that it deliberately omits or sidelines allegations of sexual abuse and other legal controversies that have long surrounded the late singer.
Some critics went further, calling the film a “soulless cash grab,” while others said it plays like a “glossy but shallow” retelling that prioritises nostalgia over depth.
The film is backed financially by the Jackson estate, which was heavily involved in production. Reports also indicate that parts of the original script referencing past allegations were removed following legal complications linked to a prior settlement agreement and non-disclosure restrictions.
Earlier versions of the project reportedly included references to the 1993 allegations involving a 13-year-old boy, but these were later scrapped after reshoots reportedly costing between $10 million and $15 million.
The film’s narrative ends before the earliest public allegations surfaced in the 1990s, a creative choice that has further fuelled criticism that the biopic avoids the most sensitive parts of Jackson’s history.
Reception has been mixed among audiences and critics alike. While some praise Jaafar Jackson’s performance and physical resemblance to his uncle, others argue the film fails to offer a full or honest portrait of his life.
Some reviewers noted that the movie largely plays as a celebration of Jackson’s music, which remains central throughout, while offering limited insight into his personal struggles or controversies.
The controversy surrounding the film reflects the broader challenge of portraying Jackson’s legacy on screen. His life continues to divide opinion, with supporters highlighting his musical influence and critics pointing to unresolved allegations and legal battles.
