President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦68 billion in operational support for the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP), in a major move to strengthen electricity supply in Borno State.
The development was disclosed in a statement by the state government, which noted that the funding will be disbursed as a monthly intervention of ₦2 billion from March 2026 to December 2028 to bridge the plant’s operational funding gap.
Governor Babagana Zulum welcomed the approval, describing it as timely and critical to the state’s economic recovery and stability.
In a statement issued through his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, Zulum expressed deep appreciation to the president.
“On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I wish to most profoundly appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving ₦2 billion monthly OPEX intervention funding from March 2026 to December 2028, totaling ₦68 billion to bridge the existing funding gap in the operations of the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP),” he said.
He added that the intervention is already making an impact:
“This has not only revived economic activities but has also significantly improved livelihoods and strengthened efforts to address security challenges.”
The Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant was established in 2021 as a federal intervention after insurgents vandalised critical electricity infrastructure, leaving the state without power for nearly two years.
The facility was commissioned the same year and later upgraded to a 50-megawatt capacity in December 2023, improving electricity supply to Maiduguri and surrounding communities.
The latest approval is expected to sustain operations at the plant and ensure more stable and reliable power supply across the region.
