The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has assured telecom subscribers that they will begin receiving compensation for poor network quality, following directives issued to operators over service lapses.
Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, disclosed this during a media roundtable held at the Marriott Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, stating that affected customers would start receiving compensation in the form of airtime.
According to him, the rollout of the compensation is expected to begin immediately, with subscribers likely to receive the airtime “today or tomorrow.”
Maida explained that the move is part of the Commission’s enforcement of quality of service (QoS) standards, aimed at ensuring that telecom operators deliver improved network performance to users.
He also revealed that the NCC is working closely with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to address issues surrounding suspended credit airtime and data services, so that subscribers can continue to enjoy uninterrupted access.
The NCC boss clarified that telecom operators, as licensees of the Commission, are not required to obtain additional licenses from the FCCPC. However, he noted that third-party service providers offering credit facilities to subscribers must be duly licensed by the consumer protection agency.
