Nigerian stand-up comedian and actor, Bovi Ugboma, has defended divorce in situations where marriages become unhealthy, arguing that separation is often a better option than remaining trapped in an unhappy relationship.
Speaking during a recent episode of The Morayo Show, Bovi said he does not view divorce as a failure but rather as a sign that one or both partners were no longer thriving in the marriage.
According to him, ending a troubled union can sometimes provide relief and create an opportunity for individuals to regain their happiness and well-being.
“I celebrate when people get divorced because I feel it means one or both people were not breathing well in the marriage. I will not suffer anybody, nor will I want anybody to suffer me,” he said.
The comedian noted that his position should not be interpreted as a dismissal of the institution of marriage or the commitment it requires. Instead, he stressed that no one should feel compelled to remain in a relationship that has become harmful or unbearable.
Bovi also reflected on his personal journey in marriage, revealing that his 17-year union has faced its share of challenges.
“That is not to say my marriage has been easy for 17 years. It has not. I got married at 29. I have been providing for 17 years nonstop,” he said.
The entertainer further addressed traditional expectations surrounding family responsibilities, particularly the belief that men should be the primary providers in the home.
While acknowledging that provision remains a major responsibility for many men, he encouraged women to pursue their ambitions and attain financial independence. He added that women who choose to contribute financially to their households deserve recognition and appreciation for their efforts.
“If a woman’s passion drives her to provide, her contributions should be recognised and respected,” he added.
