A Canada-based Nigerian medical doctor, Arinze Onwumelu, has called for a brain test for singer Portable following his celebrity boxing match with comedian Carter Efe in Lagos over the weekend.
The match, which drew significant public attention and featured widespread reactions on social media, ended with Portable suffering a defeat in the exhibition bout.
Following the fight, Dr Onwumelu, popularly known as Dr Zo, raised concerns about the possible health implications of repeated blows to the head during such high-impact events.
In a video shared online, he advised that the singer undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan to rule out possible internal head injuries.
He warned that repeated impacts to sensitive areas of the head could result in serious medical conditions, including subdural hematoma, which he described as potentially life-threatening if not detected early.
“This is an exhibition match meant for entertainment, not a real fight to harm anyone,” he said. “I watched the video, and the kind of punches delivered—Portable may need urgent medical attention.”
The doctor further urged those close to the singer to ensure he undergoes immediate medical evaluation, including brain imaging tests, to assess any possible internal damage.
He also called on organisers of celebrity boxing events to make protective headgear compulsory in order to reduce the risk of serious injuries during such matches.
Portable had earlier expressed confidence ahead of the bout, stating that he was fully prepared following previous exhibition victories over rapper Speed Darlington and actor Charles Okocha.
