Emotions ran high in Arochukwu, Abia State, on Thursday as the remains of popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo arrived in his hometown for burial, drawing tears from family members, friends and admirers.
The late actor, who died on May 11 at the age of 40 after a prolonged battle with kidney cancer, was received by a large crowd as his body was brought home in a solemn convoy ahead of his final interment.
A particularly heartbreaking moment unfolded when Ekubo’s sister caught sight of the casket carrying her brother’s remains. Overwhelmed by grief, she broke down in tears and reportedly had to be restrained as she attempted to move closer to the ambulance conveying the coffin.
The emotional scene, captured in a viral video circulating online, left many mourners visibly shaken as residents and sympathisers lined the streets to pay their last respects to the late actor.
Before proceeding to the family compound, the funeral convoy made a stop at the palace of the Eze Arochukwu, where the traditional ruler, accompanied by one of his chiefs, offered prayers over the actor’s coffin and paid tribute to his memory.
Several Nollywood stars also arrived in Arochukwu to honour their late colleague. Among those present were IK Ogbonna, Kevin Ikeduba, Ini Edo, Omoni Oboli and Yomi Casual, who joined a solemn procession through the community.
The celebrities wore customised T-shirts bearing Ekubo’s image and carried photographs of the actor as they accompanied the funeral procession through the town.
The outpouring of grief and support reflected the impact Ekubo made during his career in the Nigerian film industry, where he earned admiration for his performances and vibrant personality.
His burial rites are expected to continue in Arochukwu, where family members, friends, colleagues and fans will gather to bid him a final farewell.
