The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards is set for a historic transition as long-time host IK Osakioduwa steps down, with Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha announced as hosts for the 12th edition.
The 2026 ceremony will take place on May 9 at the Eko Hotel and Suites, marking a new era for one of Africa’s biggest entertainment events.
Osakioduwa, who has anchored the awards since its inception in 2013, exits after more than a decade at the helm. From co-hosting the inaugural edition alongside Vimbai Mutinhiri to mentoring young talents like David Oke, his contribution helped shape the show’s identity with his trademark wit and “warm Nigerian charm.”
The transition had been hinted at during the 2025 edition, and Osakioduwa has publicly backed his successors. In a show of support, he wrote: “@officialbovi and @nomzamo_m Congratulations, guys. I know you’ll kill it. I’ll be cheering for you.”
For Bovi Ugboma, stepping into the role marks a major milestone. Reflecting on the appointment, he said: “The AMVCA stage is one of the biggest in Africa, and I don’t take that lightly. I wasn’t expecting it. Considering IK has been the host from the beginning, I was really happy when I got the call. I want to bring the energy, the laughs, and the magic that this night deserves.”
Co-host Nomzamo Mbatha brings a strong pan-African and global appeal to the stage. Speaking on the opportunity, she said: “African storytelling is at an all-time high, and it’s an honour to be the one holding the mic while we celebrate the best of it.”
Organisers say the 2026 edition will further expand the awards’ continental footprint with the introduction of two new categories: Best Indigenous Language (North Africa) and Best Indigenous Language (Central Africa).
The judging panel will be led by veteran actress Joke Silva, whose appointment as Head Judge is expected to strengthen the credibility of the process. According to Atinuke Babatunde of MultiChoice West Africa, “African stories from cities like Lagos, Nairobi, Dakar, and Johannesburg reflect the continent’s identity and global connections.”
