Residents of Apapa rushed to collect diesel after a tanker loaded with the fuel fell and spilled its contents on Liverpool Bridge on Monday, causing a major traffic disruption.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, stating that traffic was diverted to the other side of the bridge for safety while emergency teams responded. Operatives from the Lagos State Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Department of State Services (DSS) were deployed to the scene to prevent a potential disaster.
According to LASTMA, the tanker’s fall led to a dangerous spill, but fortunately, there was no fire outbreak or casualties. A video circulated on social media showed residents gathering diesel with jerrycans and buckets, despite the obvious risk posed by the flammable fuel.
“The road on Liverpool Bridge inward Apapa that was cordoned off has been reopened after the contents were neutralized by men of the Lagos State Fire Service,” LASTMA said in a statement. “Traffic is expected to move better while we await the arrival of a tow truck. Counter flow methods were used during the recovery, and vehicular movement was very slow.”
Officials emphasized the importance of safety, urging residents to avoid collecting fuel directly from the spill, while monitoring continues to ensure the area remains secure.
