The African Action Congress (AAC) has announced the resignation of human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, as the party’s National Chairman.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday, shortly after Sowore emerged as the AAC presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections during the party’s primaries held in Abuja.
According to the party, Samuel Ajeigbe has been appointed as the new National Chairman of the AAC following Sowore’s exit from the leadership position.
“Omoyele Sowore has officially stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress,” the statement read. “The party hereby welcomes Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of our great party.”
The leadership change comes just hours after Sowore secured the party’s presidential ticket through a unanimous endorsement by delegates and party leaders at the primaries.
Following his nomination, Sowore was presented with the party’s flag amid cheers from supporters and delegates from across the country.
In his acceptance speech, the AAC presidential candidate said the party remains committed to building a “new Nigeria” free from corruption, insecurity, and poor governance.
He also commended party members for their resilience despite political pressure and economic challenges in the country.
Sowore further criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of incompetence and attempting to manipulate public perception ahead of the 2027 elections.
During the primaries, he also dismissed claims that the APC had millions of members participating in its internal processes, describing such figures as unrealistic.
