Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement following a major political realignment involving factions of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State.
Makinde made the declaration on Thursday during a mega political rally held at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan, where a new alliance between the PDP faction loyal to him and the APM was formally unveiled.
Addressing supporters at the rally, the governor said Nigeria needed a complete political and governance reset, insisting that the country could no longer continue with “politics as usual.”
“I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, announce my candidacy for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he declared before a cheering crowd of party supporters and political stakeholders.
Makinde also unveiled what he described as the “Reset Nigeria Movement,” a nationwide mobilisation campaign aimed at driving reforms in governance, the economy, education, healthcare, infrastructure and security. [
The rally also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the PDP faction in Oyo State and the APM, with Makinde and APM National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle signing on behalf of both parties.
Under the agreement, candidates aligned with Makinde’s political structure are expected to contest future elections on the APM platform, from the presidency down to state assembly seats.
Speaking on the alliance, Makinde said opposition parties must unite to rescue Nigeria from worsening political and economic challenges.
“The time to reset Nigeria is now. This handshake between the PDP and APM will allow us to field candidates from the presidency to the state assemblies,” he said.
