The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians to disregard a fraudulent social media post promoting a so-called free NIN correction portal, describing it as a phishing scam targeting unsuspecting members of the public.
The commission issued the warning in a public advisory shared on its official X handle on Tuesday, stating that the message and accompanying links circulating online are designed to deceive users and steal personal information.
According to NIMC, the National Identity Database remains secure and fully protected from any form of unauthorised access.
“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the commission stated.
It further assured Nigerians that its systems are safe, urging the public not to click on suspicious links or engage with unofficial platforms claiming to offer identity-related services.
“We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected,” the statement added.
The commission advised individuals seeking to update or correct their National Identification Number (NIN) records to only use its official self-service portal or visit accredited enrollment centres nationwide.
It also urged Nigerians to rely strictly on verified communication channels for updates, corrections, or other identity management services.
NIMC stressed the importance of vigilance, warning that fraudsters are increasingly using fake websites and social media posts to lure victims into revealing sensitive personal data.
The agency encouraged citizens to report any suspicious messages or links claiming to offer unauthorized NIN services, reiterating its commitment to protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s identity management system.
