The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, following disciplinary proceedings over the April 26, 2026 incident.
This was made known in a statement issued by the force and shared on their official social handles on Wednesday, noting that the decision followed internal investigations ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, after the case triggered public concern over alleged extrajudicial conduct.
All officers linked to the shooting were withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where they underwent expedited disciplinary proceedings.
The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and other internal panels found that ASP Nuhu Usman acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms.
According to the statement, “His actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law.”
Following the findings, the FDC recommended the dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers found culpable. The Inspector-General of Police approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
The statement further noted that, “Upon completion of the administrative procedures, the affected officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution for their roles in the extrajudicial shooting.”
The Inspector-General of Police reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions and abuse of power, stressing that officers are not above the law.
He said, “No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”
The police leadership also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, Mr Mene Ogidi, saying, “The Force is fully committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served, in a manner that reinforces public confidence and institutional accountability.”
Members of the public were urged to remain calm as the Force reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and respect for human rights.
