Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has condemned in the strongest terms the killing of a defenceless youth, Mena Otidi, by a police officer, describing the incident as a clear case of police brutality and a grave violation of human life.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor described the act as “barbaric, unlawful and unacceptable,” stressing that no citizen deserves to be subjected to such violence. He expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that the state government would stand by them in their pursuit of justice.
Oborevwori emphasized that the protection of lives and property remains the top priority of his administration, noting that acts of extrajudicial killing undermine public trust in law enforcement and the justice system. He insisted that all officers involved in the incident must be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The governor, however, commended the swift response of the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for approving the dismissal and prosecution of the officers found culpable, including ASP Nuhu Usman. He described the action as a strong signal that accountability will be enforced and that no officer is above the law.
He stressed that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, especially as the incident, captured in a widely circulated video, has sparked outrage among Nigerians.
Governor Oborevwori assured the bereaved family that the state government would closely monitor the case to its logical conclusion, pledging that no stone would be left unturned in ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
He also called on residents of the state to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and preventing future occurrences of such tragic incidents.
