The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed viral social media reports claiming that the pupils and teachers abducted from communities in Orire Local Government Area of the state have been released, insisting that the victims remain in captivity.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, the police described the claims as false, misleading, and entirely unsubstantiated, urging members of the public to disregard the information.
The Command clarified that there has been no development indicating the release of the abducted students and teachers, contrary to reports circulating online.
It further advised residents to rely only on official communications from the Nigeria Police Force and other authorised government agencies for accurate updates on the incident.
The abduction occurred on Friday, May 15, 2026, when over 40 school children and their teachers were reportedly kidnapped during a coordinated attack on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community High School, Ahoro-Esienle; and L.A. Primary School in the Orire Local Government Area.
The police reiterated that intensive and coordinated rescue operations are still ongoing, with security operatives deploying human and operational resources to ensure the safe return of the victims.
According to the Command, efforts are focused on rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers unharmed, reuniting them with their families, and apprehending those responsible for the attack.
While acknowledging public concern, the police warned against the spread of fake news and unverified reports, noting that such misinformation could trigger panic, disrupt ongoing security operations, and threaten public peace.
The Command urged Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant, and supportive of security agencies, stressing that it remains committed to securing the release of the victims and providing timely updates as the situation develops.
