Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for the immediate release of schoolchildren recently abducted by gunmen in Oyo State, following the circulation of disturbing images showing the victims online.
Obi made the appeal in a statement shared via his verified social media account on Wednesday, expressing deep concern over the condition of the children and describing the situation as a painful reflection of Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
He said he was emotionally disturbed by what he observed in the viral images of the abducted schoolchildren.
“I am deeply shocked and heartbroken by the condition in which these abducted school children are, as seen from their flagellated bodies. It is a painful reminder of the depth of insecurity in our land,” he said.
Obi linked the incident to broader issues of governance and leadership, arguing that failures in society today often have long-term consequences for future generations.
“I have always made it clear that the society we abuse today will take its revenge on our children tomorrow,” Obi stated.
He further described the abduction as evidence of deeper systemic challenges affecting the country, warning that the effects of poor governance may persist beyond the present generation.
“This is a classic example of how the abuse of governance and society today can produce devastating consequences long after the abusers are gone,” he said.
Obi also referenced the country’s growing debt profile, drawing parallels between present decisions and future burdens on younger Nigerians.
“It is on the same line that I argue that the loans our leaders take today will hurt our children in the future, as many of them will mature for repayment and consequences long after we are gone,” he added.
Addressing the abductors directly, Obi appealed for compassion and urged them to release the children without delay.
“Remember that these are innocent children—sons and daughters of people who have placed their hopes, dreams, and entire future in them,” he said.
“In every one of them, you will find reflections of your own children, your own family, and your own humanity.”
He maintained that no justification could ever excuse harm against innocent children.
“No grievance, no hardship, no justification can ever outweigh the sanctity of a child’s life and innocence,” Obi said.
Concluding his appeal, Obi called for mercy and immediate action to ensure the safe return of the victims to their families.
“I therefore appeal to your sense of mercy: release these children immediately. Let them go. Return them safely to society to reunite with their families.”
