A fresh wave of political tension has gripped the Oyo State House of Assembly following rumours of an alleged impeachment plot that has stirred uncertainty among lawmakers and political stakeholders in the state.
What initially began as quiet speculation has quickly escalated into a full-blown political issue within the Assembly, drawing attention from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), which is said to be closely watching developments.
At the centre of the unfolding situation is a meeting reportedly held at the residence of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, where lawmakers were said to have gathered amid concerns about an alleged attempt to create a rift between the executive and legislative arms of government.
Following the meeting, several lawmakers began publicly clarifying their positions regarding the alleged impeachment move.
While some members of the Assembly, including the Deputy Speaker, have openly denied involvement in any plot to remove the Speaker, others have remained silent, a development that has intensified speculation about possible divisions within the legislature.
The Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin, is believed to be at the centre of the unfolding controversy.
The Chief Whip of the Assembly, Gbenga Oyekola, emerged as one of the most vocal lawmakers addressing the issue. In a statement shared on his verified Facebook page, Oyekola firmly denied taking part in any move capable of destabilising the state.
“I was neither invited to nor aware of any plan capable of undermining the peace and stability of our dear state,” Oyekola said.
He also referred to discussions that reportedly took place during the governor’s meeting, disclosing claims that the Speaker had previously been approached by certain political and traditional figures regarding his political future.
According to Oyekola, those approaches allegedly involved financial inducements, which the Speaker was said to have rejected.
Reaffirming his stance, the lawmaker pledged loyalty to Governor Makinde and reiterated his commitment to supporting the administration while promoting peace and stability across the state.
Several other lawmakers have also begun publicly declaring their support for the governor, a move observers say may be aimed at easing tensions within the Assembly.
However, analysts note that the silence of some lawmakers may be just as significant as the public statements already made, suggesting that deeper political divisions could still exist within the House.
Adding further intrigue to the unfolding political drama are renewed references to earlier warnings by former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, who had previously cautioned about potential political instability in the state.
