The mother of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, Evangelist Mrs Jane Mmerechi Ekubo-Okwaraeke, has paid an emotional tribute to her son, expressing the deep pain of his loss and the memories she continues to cherish weeks after his passing.
The touching message was featured in the funeral brochure distributed during the actor’s burial ceremonies held in Arochukwu, Abia State, on June 17 and 18.
Alex Ekubo died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40 following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer after what his family described as a brief but courageous battle with the illness.
In the tribute titled “A Tribute to My Exceptional Son – I Love You Till Tomorrow,” the grieving mother described the late actor as her pride and joy, saying she still misses the special bond they shared.
“I am still longing for your calls, chats, care, unconditional love, your gist, your encouragement, your advice, our corporate prayers, and our praise and worship sessions,” she wrote.
Mrs Ekubo-Okwaraeke praised her son’s character, describing him as an exceptional individual whose life was marked by kindness, humility and an unwavering commitment to God and humanity.
According to her, the actor’s life touched countless people, and she never doubted his judgment or values.
“My beloved son, you were exceptional. You were different in all that you did. You were a priceless gift whose life brought joy, laughter and pride to everyone who knew you,” she stated.
While acknowledging the pain of losing him, she said she found comfort in the positive impact he made during his lifetime and the outpouring of tributes that have followed his death.
She also reflected on his Christian faith, recalling that he once told her that introducing him to Jesus Christ was the greatest gift she had ever given him.
“Thank God your life on earth was dedicated to serving God, impacting lives, loving others and spreading the Gospel. You were never ashamed of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,” she wrote.
The bereaved mother further remembered the words of encouragement her son often shared whenever she felt discouraged.
“You would always tell me, ‘Sweetheart, jide obi gi aka. Remember, God is beautiful in all situations. Be strong and courageous, great woman of God,’” she recalled.
Describing him as resilient, generous and humble, she said the numerous tributes from friends, colleagues and admirers had helped the family cope with the painful loss.
“You lived a good life and left an unforgettable footprint in the hearts of all who knew you,” she added.
Mrs Ekubo-Okwaraeke also expressed gratitude to her son’s wife, Anwuli, for her unwavering support and dedication to him and the family throughout his life.
She concluded the tribute with a message of hope and faith, saying she believes they will meet again.
“This is very hard for me, Ikuku Oma. But my consolation is that we shall meet again on the resurrection morning, when we shall part no more. May your beautiful soul rest in perfect peace.”
The late actor, a former Mr Nigeria runner-up and one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces, was laid to rest in his hometown of Arochukwu. He is survived by his wife, mother and other family members.
