A political and sporting controversy has emerged after a U.S. envoy to President Donald Trump reportedly suggested that Iran should be replaced by Italy at the FIFA World Cup finals, according to the Financial Times.
The envoy, Paolo Zampolli, said it would be a “dream” to see four-time world champions Italy feature at the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, despite the team failing to qualify after losing a playoff match.
“I confirm I have suggested to Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup,” Zampolli said. “I am an Italian native and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion.”
The proposal is reportedly part of wider diplomatic and political dynamics involving relations between Washington and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, following tensions linked to recent geopolitical disputes.
Italy, however, failed to qualify for the tournament for a third consecutive time after losing their playoff match, while Iran secured qualification through the official FIFA process.
Iran’s participation has recently faced political uncertainty amid tensions in the Middle East, including war-related developments involving the United States and Israel. Iranian football authorities had earlier suggested discussions with FIFA about relocating their matches, but world football governing body FIFA has maintained that qualification rules will be respected.
