Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has declared a nationwide paid public holiday following Senegal’s victory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The announcement was disclosed in a post shared by Africa Fact Zone on X as celebrations erupted across the country after the Teranga Lions defeated Morocco to lift the continental trophy, securing Senegal’s latest AFCON title.
According to a report by The South African Report, President Faye declared Monday a paid public holiday to allow citizens across the country to fully participate in the celebrations marking the historic win.
The president also reportedly promised financial rewards for members of the national team in recognition of their performance and success at the tournament.
Scenes of jubilation were recorded in Dakar and other major cities, with fans flooding the streets, waving national flags, singing, and celebrating late into the night as Senegal basked in continental glory.
