Osbourne Umahi, 27, son of Nigeria’s Works Minister David Umahi, has officially joined the race for the Ohaozara Local Government Area chairmanship under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Over the weekend, he picked the party’s nomination and expression of interest form, reportedly priced at N30 million.
According to a report by SAHARAREPORTERS, Umahi was escorted to the APC state secretariat in Abakaliki by a large crowd of supporters. He was warmly received by members of the party’s State Executive Committee, led by Ebonyi APC Chairman Stanley Okoro-Emegha. Okoro-Emegha described Umahi as a talented young politician and businessman capable of transforming Ohaozara’s fortunes.
Addressing party members, Umahi expressed gratitude for their support and pledged not to betray the trust reposed in him. He said that, if elected, his administration would prioritize youth empowerment, emphasizing that young people are the backbone of development. He also promised to sustain his father’s legacy of infrastructure development across the local government area.
The decision to peg the nomination form at N30 million has sparked debate across Nigeria, given that the country’s minimum wage is N70,000 per month. Many citizens have criticized the figure as excessive, though party officials argue it is in line with internal APC policies.
Ebonyi APC’s local government primaries are scheduled for January 25, 2026. Ahead of the primaries, Okoro-Emegha held a meeting with 13 Local Government Chairmen and 171 Electoral Ward chairmen and secretaries to ensure alignment and smooth coordination of party activities.
David Umahi, Osbourne’s father, was appointed Minister of Works by President Bola Tinubu and sworn into office on August 21, 2023, following his nomination earlier that month.
