The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced activities for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, announcing the opening of a 38-day window for political parties to conduct their primaries.
According to the electoral body, political parties now have from April 23 to May 30, 2026, to organize primaries for all elective positions, including presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Houses of Assembly seats.
INEC stated that the period also covers the resolution of any disputes arising from the primaries, stressing the importance of compliance with the electoral timetable.
As part of the guidelines, parties are required to submit their membership registers to the commission at least 21 days before their respective primaries. The commission fixed May 10, 2026, as the final deadline for the submission of these registers.
