A faction of the Accord Party has elected Prof. Christopher Imumolen as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, marking an early move in the buildup to what is expected to be a highly competitive electoral cycle.
The decision, announced in a statement signed by the faction’s National Secretary, Mallam Muktar Abdullah, followed the party’s Special National Convention held in Lagos.
According to the statement, delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory participated in the convention, where Imumolen emerged as the consensus candidate endorsed by party stakeholders across the country.
The faction said his nomination represents a return to the presidential contest for Imumolen, who previously ran in the 2023 election, adding that he now enters the race with broader grassroots support and stronger national visibility.
Party leaders also expressed confidence that his candidacy would attract younger voters and professionals, describing him as a viable option for expanding the party’s political relevance ahead of the 2027 elections.
In his acceptance speech, Imumolen thanked delegates for their support and described his emergence as both a call to national service and a reflection of the will of party members.
He pledged that an Accord-led administration would prioritize job creation, tackle insecurity, and implement economic reforms aimed at reducing poverty and expanding opportunities for Nigerians.
“I have rightfully emerged as the candidate for Accord. The list will now be submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and we await their official publication of the candidates later this September,” he said.
The faction reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy and transparency, noting that steps had been taken to manage internal disagreements arising from the primary process and maintain party unity.
It also announced plans to unveil a detailed socio-economic agenda in the coming weeks, outlining its policy direction ahead of the elections.
The nomination formally places Imumolen in the 2027 presidential race as political parties begin early positioning for what is expected to be a fiercely contested election.
