Media practitioners in Delta State have been urged to steer clear of fake news, defamatory content, and unverified reports as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The call was made by the Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, who was represented by the Director of New Media, Mr. Timothy Agbaragu, during the fourth anniversary celebration of Hill Nigeria Media and a capacity-building training for media personnel held in Asaba.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner warned that the increasing spread of misinformation, baseless allegations, and personal attacks within the political space poses a serious threat to democratic values and peaceful coexistence.
He noted that as the election season draws closer, tensions are expected to rise, making it even more critical for journalists and media stakeholders to uphold professionalism and ensure that only verified and factual information is disseminated to the public.
According to him, unchecked defamatory content could mislead voters, deepen divisions, and potentially trigger conflict.
Aniagwu called on politicians, their supporters, and media practitioners to prioritize issue-based campaigns and responsible communication rather than resorting to character attacks and sensationalism.
He also commended the organisers of the training programme for their commitment to promoting ethical journalism and strengthening the capacity of media professionals in the state.
Chairman of the occasion, Amb. Mayor Chinedu Enujeko, in his remarks, praised the initiative, describing it as a vital platform for fostering dialogue, unity, and positive societal change.
“I commend you for organizing such an outstanding programme. Your passion and hard work are evident, and I wish you even greater success as you continue to make a positive impact,” he said.
He further acknowledged the role of the organiser in contributing to his personal and political development.
Also speaking, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Delta (UNIDEL), Agbor, Professor Patrick Ijeh, alongside Dr. Blessing Umunnah of the Federal University Otuoke, emphasized the need for journalists to remain committed to truth, accuracy, and ethical standards despite external pressures.
They highlighted the importance of fact-checking, conflict-sensitive reporting, and combating misinformation, especially during politically sensitive periods.
In her remarks, the organiser, Mrs. Christy Aboghe, underscored the critical role of the media in shaping public opinion and safeguarding democratic values.
She stressed that as the 2027 elections approach, journalists must embrace accuracy, balance, and professionalism in their reportage.
Participants at the training described the programme as timely and impactful, noting that it equipped them with modern tools and strategies needed to navigate the evolving media landscape.
The event attracted journalists and media stakeholders from across the country and featured goodwill messages, with a renewed call for collaboration to ensure credible, peaceful, and transparent electoral processes in 2027.
