The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), in a major political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mohammed announced his defection on Saturday at the Bauchi Government House, alongside key political allies and members of the PDP loyal to the Tanimu Turaki-led faction. He was flanked by the APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, and other top party officials.
“After extensive consultation, we have taken a firm and strategic decision to join the Allied Peoples Movement,” the governor said.
He explained that the move was driven by the need to secure electoral victory and provide a credible political platform for his supporters ahead of the 2027 polls.
“This is guided by one overriding objective: to secure victory in both states and continue to serve our people with utmost integrity, effectively mobilise our supporters and present a coherent and credible alternative to the people,” he added.
The 67-year-old governor noted that with the elections drawing closer, he could not risk leaving his supporters without a viable platform.
“Our duty is to provide energy and direction, and at the same time ensure that the opportunity before us is not diminished,” Mohammed stated.
Despite his exit, the former Federal Capital Territory Minister expressed gratitude to the PDP, the platform on which he was elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023, acknowledging its role in his political journey.
“It has been a platform through which we have contributed to the development of our state and the nation. We remain grateful for this history and the opportunities provided,” he said.
In a symbolic gesture, Dantalle presented Mohammed with his APM membership card, along with the party’s flag and a branded cap, formally welcoming him into the party.
“I welcome you into the party and present you with your membership card,” the APM chairman said.
Mohammed’s defection follows months of speculation over his political future amid internal crises within the PDP. Until his exit, he served as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
