Afrobeats star Davido has lost a $50,000 wager after the Super Eagles of Nigeria were eliminated by host nation Morocco in the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Wednesday night.
The high-profile clash ended 0–0 after regulation time and extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium before Morocco secured a 4–2 victory in the penalty shootout to book their place in the final.
Hours before kickoff, Davido had publicly shared his betting slip on social media, revealing his confidence in Nigeria’s chances against the Atlas Lions. However, the Super Eagles were unable to convert their chances during open play and missed two spot-kicks in the shootout.
The loss was not limited to the music star. Popular Nigerian TikToker Peller also confirmed that he lost $3,000 after betting on Nigeria to win the match within 90 minutes.
Reacting during a livestream after the game, Peller expressed frustration while acknowledging the team’s effort.
“Thank you Super Eagles for playing very well,” he said sarcastically.
“I have lost my $3,000 bet. You guys were playing well the previous games before I decided to place a bet and watch your match.”
He jokingly suggested that Nigeria’s fortunes dipped once he began watching their matches, adding that he might stop tuning in to help the team regain form.
The reactions highlight the growing influence of celebrity involvement and sports betting culture around major football tournaments, particularly AFCON, where fan expectations often run high.
Nigeria will now face Egypt in the third-place playoff, while Morocco advance to the AFCON final.
