The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned Nigerian travellers against visa overstays, stressing that such actions could have far-reaching consequences for future applicants and the broader travel community.
In a statement shared on Monday, the mission emphasised the need for strict compliance with U.S. immigration rules, noting that visa overstay and misuse of travel documents remain serious concerns.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the advisory stated. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”
The mission cautioned that failure to adhere to visa conditions could undermine access to travel opportunities for other Nigerians, particularly those seeking entry for education, business, or family visits.
It also raised concerns about visa fraud and the misuse of travel documentation, urging applicants to respect the terms of their visas throughout their stay in the United States.
The embassy encouraged members of the public to play an active role in safeguarding the integrity of the immigration system by reporting credible cases of visa fraud.
According to the statement, individuals with relevant information can report directly to official consular fraud prevention channels via AbujaFPU@state.gov or LagosFPU@state.gov.
While reiterating its commitment to supporting safe, legal, and orderly travel between Nigeria and the United States, the mission assured that those who comply with immigration laws will not be disadvantaged by the actions of others.
