A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has issued an order restraining the Chief Judge of Rivers State from receiving or acting on any impeachment notice directed at Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.
According to the order, the court effectively halts ongoing impeachment moves against the governor, pending the determination of a substantive suit before the court.
Although details of the ruling were still emerging as of the time of this report, the court’s decision is understood to be an interim order aimed at preserving the status quo and preventing further steps in the impeachment process.
The order comes amid heightened political tension in Rivers State following moves by the House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, including a formal request to the Chief Judge to constitute a seven-man investigative panel in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
