Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), marking a major political development in the state.
The resignation was confirmed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who disclosed that Yusuf conveyed his decision in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area. The resignation takes effect from January 25, 2026.
In the letter, Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party but cited persistent internal crises, leadership disagreements, and ongoing legal battles as key reasons for his decision. He said the internal disputes had weakened unity within the party and created divisions that were increasingly difficult to reconcile.
According to the Governor, his decision was taken after careful reflection and was guided by the overall interest of the people of Kano State, stressing that the move was not motivated by bitterness or personal grievances.
“This decision is taken in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State,” Yusuf stated.
The Governor also appreciated the NNPP leadership and members for their support throughout his political journey, particularly since 2022, acknowledging the goodwill and cooperation he enjoyed while in the party.
Reports indicate that Governor Yusuf is leaving the NNPP alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen, further deepening the political impact of the decision.
Confirming receipt of the resignation letter, the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the party’s internal challenges and praised Yusuf’s performance in office, describing him as one of the most impactful governors produced by the party.
Although the Governor has not officially announced his next political destination, speculation is rife that he may defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), especially following his recent meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
