The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Adedamola Michael Oyewole, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, a final-year law student of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), in Warri.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, disclosed the arrest on Monday while briefing journalists on the Command’s achievements in the second quarter of 2026.
According to the CP, the tragic incident occurred on June 24, 2026, after officers attached to the ‘B’ Division in Warri received a distress call from a landlord reporting that one of his tenants had allegedly killed his girlfriend inside his apartment.
“On 24/6/2026 at about 2000hrs, operatives of ‘B’ Division received a distress call from a landlord (name withheld) that one of his tenants had killed his girlfriend in his apartment,” the police commissioner said.
He explained that detectives immediately responded to the scene, where they found the victim, identified as Habibatu Aruwa, 21, lying in a pool of blood inside the self-contained apartment.
“The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty,” Abaniwonda stated.
The police boss said the suspect was arrested at the scene and later confessed during interrogation to stabbing the deceased during an argument.
“The suspect, one Adedamola Michael Oyewole, aged 31 years, was arrested. Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased found out that the suspect was legally married to another woman residing in the United States of America. This led to an argument between them,” he said.
According to the commissioner, the disagreement turned violent after the suspect allegedly attacked the victim with a knife.
“The suspect confessed that in the heat of the argument, he used a knife and stabbed the deceased several times on her neck, stomach and thighs, resulting in her death,” Abaniwonda added.
The police said investigations into the incident are ongoing, while the suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
