WhatsApp has introduced a new username feature that will allow users to connect with others without sharing their personal phone numbers, adding an extra layer of privacy to the popular messaging platform.
Ahead of the official rollout later this year, the Meta-owned app has opened reservations, allowing users to secure their preferred usernames before the feature becomes widely available.
Announcing the update, WhatsApp said the feature is designed to give users more control over their privacy.
“Your phone number is personal and sometimes you want to connect without handing it over. That’s why we’re introducing usernames for WhatsApp.”
The company also confirmed that eligible users can begin reserving usernames immediately.
“Starting this week, you can reserve a username to use later this year when we launch the feature. It takes just a few seconds. Make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp and then go to Settings > Account > Username.”
How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username
If the feature is available on your device, follow these simple steps:
Update WhatsApp to the latest version from your device’s app store.
- Open the WhatsApp application.
- Tap Settings.
- Select Account.
- Tap Username.
- Enter your preferred username.
If the username is available, confirm your selection to reserve it.
Once reserved, your username will be ready to use when WhatsApp officially launches the feature later this year.
The new system will allow users to identify and communicate with others using unique usernames instead of phone numbers, making it easier to interact while keeping personal contact information private.
