Babcock University has dismissed a viral “First Class Upper” certificate circulating online and linked to Nigerian streamer Carter Efe, describing the document as fake and warning that those responsible for its creation and circulation could face legal action.
In a statement shared on its official X account, the university said it had no affiliation with the certificate, insisting that the document did not originate from the institution.
“Babcock University unequivocally states that this document is false, unauthorised, and does not emanate from the university,” the statement read.
The institution clarified that it does not issue “Honorary Certificates” in recognition of undergraduate academic performance, contrary to claims suggested by the viral document.
“For the avoidance of doubt: Babcock University does not issue ‘Honorary Certificates’ in recognition of undergraduate academic performance. Academic excellence, including the award of First Class Honours, is formally recognised only through the University’s official degree certificate and academic transcript issued by the Office of the Registrar,” the university stated.
The university further directed those behind the document to immediately stop producing, circulating or using the forged certificate.
“Accordingly, all persons responsible for the production, issuance, circulation, or use of the fraudulent certificate and any similar unauthorised documents are hereby directed to immediately cease and desist from such unlawful acts,” it added.
Babcock also warned that it would not hesitate to pursue legal action to safeguard the credibility of its academic records and institutional reputation.
“The University will not hesitate to pursue all available legal remedies to protect the integrity of its academic credentials and institutional reputation,” the statement concluded.
The clarification follows widespread circulation of the purported certificate on social media, where it was claimed to belong to Carter Efe, sparking debate and prompting the university’s swift response.
