A fire incident was swiftly brought under control on Tuesday at the Senate wing of the National Assembly in Abuja, averting what could have developed into a major disaster.
The outbreak occurred in the kitchen section of Hearing Room 107 shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, the North-East nominee to the commission’s board.
The session, chaired by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, had just ended when smoke was noticed coming from the kitchen area, prompting concern among lawmakers and staff in the vicinity.
Witnesses said Senator Ekpenyong, alongside Senator Salihu Mustapha, quickly moved to contain the situation before it could escalate.
Preliminary reports suggest the fire started from a microwave oven that had been left on in the kitchen compartment.
Their prompt intervention ensured the flames were extinguished within minutes, preventing any damage to the building or disruption of legislative activities.
No injuries or casualties were recorded, and normal operations resumed shortly after the situation was brought under control.
