The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winners in five of the six chairmanship seats contested in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured one seat.
The elections, held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, covered six Area Councils, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Kwali, Kuje, and Gwagwalada.
Gwagwalada: PDP’s Lone Victory
In Gwagwalada Area Council, the PDP candidate, Mohammed Kasim, emerged victorious after polling 22,165 votes to defeat the APC candidate, Yahaya Shehu, who secured 17,788 votes.
Other results declared:
APGA – 1,687
ADC – 1,366
The Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, declared Kasim duly elected, having satisfied the requirements of the law.
Bwari: APC Clinches Seat
In Bwari Area Council, Joshua Ishaku of the APC was declared winner with 18,466 votes.

ZLP – 3,515
The Returning Officer, Mohammed Nurudeen, officially returned Ishaku elected.
AMAC: Maikalangu Re-elected
In the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was re-elected after polling 40,295 votes to defeat candidates of other parties.

INEC’s AMAC Collation Officer, Andrew Abue, confirmed Maikalangu as winner.
Abaji: APC Maintains Hold
Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the APC won the Abaji Area Council chairmanship election with 15,536 votes.

He was subsequently declared winner by INEC.
Kwali: APC Defeats PDP
In Kwali Area Council, APC candidate Nuhu Daniel polled 17,032 votes to defeat PDP’s Haruna Pai, who secured 8,575 votes. Daniel was returned elected after securing the majority of lawful votes cast.
Kuje: APC Completes Dominance
Kuje Area Council also went to the APC, with candidate Danjuma Shekwolo polling 17,269 votes to clinch the chairmanship seat.
