The Delta State Police Command has demoted two police officers after they were found guilty of extorting a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) transaction inside a police station, following the conclusion of an orderly room trial.
The disciplinary action was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi.
According to the statement, the officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, both attached to the ‘C’ Division, Asaba, were captured in a viral video on January 13, 2026, receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the police station.
The incident sparked public outrage and prompted an internal disciplinary investigation by the command.
Following the orderly room proceedings, the officers were found guilty of Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion, and Discreditable Conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.
The Commissioner of Police upheld the recommendations of the panel, ordering that Inspector Augustine Jeremiah be reduced in rank to Sergeant, while Corporal Miracle Ehirim was demoted to the rank of Constable.
CP Oyeniyi said the punishment reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism and accountability, stressing that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, maintains a zero-tolerance policy on extortion and other forms of misconduct.
He also reiterated the Inspector-General’s ban on the use of Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations across the country.
According to the commissioner, no police officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise, warning that any officer found violating the directive would face disciplinary measures.
The police boss urged officers and men of the Delta State Command to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights.
He added that the sanctions imposed on the two officers should serve as a deterrent to others while reaffirming the command’s commitment to discipline, transparency and restoring public confidence in policing.
The Delta State Police Command also encouraged members of the public to report cases of police misconduct through its Complaint Response Unit using the following dedicated lines, 09155570008 or 09011112311.
The command assured residents that all complaints would be treated promptly in line with ongoing efforts to improve accountability and service delivery within the Nigeria Police Force.
