Supporters and critics of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, converged on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja on Monday, creating a tense atmosphere outside the Jabi office.
Eyewitnesses reported that protesters were sharply divided. Some rallied in support of El-Rufai, chanting in his favour, while others demanded that the anti-graft agency conduct a thorough investigation into his activities.
Mild drama unfolded when security personnel reportedly stopped certain members of El-Rufai’s entourage from entering the EFCC premises. Despite the momentary hold-up, El-Rufai later proceeded into the facility to honour an invitation from the commission.
The former governor’s appearance follows days after his legal team confirmed he would comply with an EFCC summons, following a failed attempt by authorities to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja last Thursday.
Protesters remained outside throughout the visit, drawing attention from passersby and residents in the area. While the demonstration was largely peaceful, the event underscored the deep divisions surrounding El-Rufai’s legal and political standing.
The proceedings inside the EFCC are ongoing, and further details are expected as the investigation unfolds.
