Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has explained the reasons behind her decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying she could no longer remain in a party where promises made to her and her supporters were not honoured.
Speaking during an appearance on The Morayo Show, the former lawmaker said her resignation from the APC was motivated by disappointment after the party’s consensus governorship candidate in Ogun State allegedly failed to fulfil commitments made during the party’s internal political process.
According to her, the decision to quit the ruling party came after she became convinced that the assurances given to her camp had been ignored.
“I resigned from the APC because I was upset that the consensus candidate failed to keep the promises he made to me and my followers,” she said.
Iyabo’s remarks come weeks after the Ogun State chapter of the PDP officially welcomed her into the party following her resignation from the APC.
The former senator returned to active politics in January 2026, ending nearly 15 years away from the political scene. She joined the APC and declared her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election.
However, her ambition suffered a setback after she lost the party’s governorship ticket.
On May 31, 2026, Iyabo announced her resignation from the APC, accusing the party leadership of disrespect, betrayal and unfair treatment during the selection process.
