Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly of Ijaw extraction have called on Speaker Martin Amaewhule to reopen the chambers, urging lawmakers to resume impeachment proceedings against Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu.
The move comes after four lawmakers, who had earlier supported a political resolution to the ongoing crisis in the state, withdrew from that arrangement and rejoined the impeachment process.
The House, initially scheduled to reconvene on Thursday, did not meet as planned. However, on Friday, lawmakers gathered at the conference hall within their residential quarters to demand the continuation of the impeachment exercise.
The legislators said their decision to proceed was prompted by the governor and deputy governor’s failure to address the constitutional issues outlined in the impeachment notice.
Speaking to journalists, Hon. Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I) and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II) stated that they had abandoned earlier political solutions and were now committed to moving forward with the impeachment proceedings.
