Media personality Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze, has weighed in on the ongoing debates comparing global Afrobeats star Wizkid to Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
In a recent broadcast, Daddy Freeze firmly stated that such comparisons are misplaced, arguing that Fela’s legacy extends far beyond music into activism, courage, and societal sacrifice.
“Until Wizkid is ready to stand up and stone the government, he shouldn’t compare himself to Fela,” Freeze said, highlighting that Fela faced brutal imprisonments, physical assaults, and intense political opposition while using his music as a tool for social and political change.
He stressed that Fela was not merely a musician but a freedom fighter and philanthropist whose artistry was inseparable from his activism. “Fela was not a troublemaker; he was a freedom fighter. His activism and music went hand-in-glove. You can’t separate the two,” Freeze added.
The broadcaster’s remarks come amid widespread online discussions in which fans and critics debate the legacies and impacts of both artists, reflecting the enduring influence of Fela’s revolutionary work on modern African music.
