Former President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Professor Francis Faduyile, has called for a proper investigation into the death of Chimamanda Adichie’s 21-month-old son, warning against a media trial.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of 7 January at Euracare Hospital, Lagos, during an emergency medical procedure. Adichie has alleged that her son’s death resulted from medical negligence by the attending anaesthesiologist.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Faduyile, a Professor of Pathology and Forensic Medicine at Lagos State University, urged authorities to set up the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to formally investigate the case. He emphasised that medical matters should follow professional channels rather than being aired in public.
“It is important for our populace to know that there are different ways you can take charge of cases of medical negligence rather than going to the media,” he said.
“Every profession has its own ethics and regulations. Let us follow the process. Sometimes it may be long and torturous, but can you blame the populace? It may be difficult because they have lost a loved one and they are in deep grief.”
Faduyile insisted that the MDCN, if fully supported, would conduct a thorough investigation, thereby strengthening confidence in the Nigerian medical profession.
“We need to call on the government. Why are you hesitating to set up the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria? This is over one year. There is no reason. Almost all the members there are statutory,” he added.
Legal Notice Served by Family
Meanwhile, Chimamanda Adichie has served a legal notice on Euracare Hospital through the law firm of Kemi Pinheiro SAN, alleging negligence and breach of professional duty that led to her son’s death.
The notice states that the toddler, Nkanu, developed severe complications after being sedated with propofol during transfers for multiple procedures, including an echocardiogram, brain MRI, lumbar puncture, and central line insertion, preparatory for a planned medical evacuation to the United States.
The family alleges inadequate monitoring, improper drug dosing, insufficient medical personnel, and delayed responses during the medical procedures.
Lagos State Government Steps In
The Lagos State Government has ordered a formal investigation. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Health, said the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) has begun a comprehensive review of the hospital and all allegations.
“The investigation will examine compliance with clinical protocols, professional conduct, patient safety standards, and the roles of all parties involved. Findings will be made public,” Ogunyemi said.
HEFAMAA confirmed it would work with the MDCN and other relevant authorities to ensure a credible and transparent investigation into the tragic incident.
