Today, the organized labour will begin nationwide protests against the Federal Government’s decision to increase electricity tariffs and remove subsidies in the power sector.
The directive followed a meeting of the Central Working Committee, CWC, on April 30, 2024.
A statement signed by NLC Acting Secretary-General, Chris Uyot, said: “The nationwide picketing is slated for Monday, 13 May, 2024.”
The organised labour had written a protest letter to NERC headquarters in which it gave a 12 May 2024 ultimatum within which NERC should reverse the hike of electricity tariff or face mass action.
The hike in electricity tariffs, which represents a 240% increase, was announced by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on April 3.
The NERC claimed that the hike would save the government N1.5tn, but the House of Representatives, labour unions, and civil society organizations have called for a reversal of the hike.
The protests are expected to lead to the shutdown of the Abuja headquarters of NERC, the Ministry of Power, and state offices of power distribution companies.
