The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that Nigerian TikToker, Mirabel, is currently in custody as investigations continue into her controversial rape allegation.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed the development on Friday, stating that the social media personality, known on TikTok as @mirab351, is being held while detectives conclude their findings.
“She is with us now and investigation is ongoing,” Babaseyi said.
Police authorities had initially maintained that Mirabel was treated as a complainant after she reported an alleged sexual assault. The matter gained public attention when she posted emotional videos online claiming that an unidentified man forced his way into her apartment on February 15, restrained her, and threatened that his family’s influence would prevent justice.
The allegations triggered widespread outrage, with many Nigerians calling for swift action and justice for survivors of sexual violence.
According to the police, the Commissioner of Police directed officers at the Ibafo Division to immediately establish contact with her after the claims surfaced online. She later reported at the station, provided preliminary statements, and underwent medical examination before the case was transferred to the Ogijo Police Station, where the alleged incident reportedly occurred.
However, as investigations progressed, the police said they began examining inconsistencies surrounding the claim, leading to her current detention.
When asked whether Mirabel would face prosecution if investigators conclude that the allegation was fabricated, the spokesperson declined to make a definitive statement.
“The facts will tell at the conclusion of our investigation,” Babaseyi added.
He reiterated that while perpetrators of sexual assault would be arrested and prosecuted if allegations are substantiated, Nigerian law also criminalises providing false information to law enforcement agencies.
The command assured the public that due process would be followed and that updates would be provided once investigations are concluded.
