Africa’s richest businessman and chairman of the Dangote Group has criticised Nigeria’s wealthy elite for prioritising luxury lifestyles over productive investment, saying the trend is hurting the nation’s economic development and job creation.
The remarks were made in a video clip currently making rounds on social media, where Dangote lamented that private jets have become so common in Nigeria that finding space to park one at local airports has become difficult.
“It pains me when I go to the local airport, whether here or in Lagos, and even finding a parking space for your plane is impossible because everybody has a private jet. Those private jets could be in industries creating jobs,” he said.
Dangote urged affluent Nigerians to divert spending on luxury goods such as private jets, Rolls-Royce cars and other extravagances towards establishing industries that would spur economic growth and tackle the country’s unemployment challenges. He drew a contrast with past leadership and simpler norms, noting that previously even national leaders drove modest vehicles like the Peugeot 504, which discouraged conspicuous consumption among elites.
He also stressed the importance of bolstering sectors like manufacturing and agriculture through domestic investment, arguing that such focus would be more beneficial for sustainable economic progress. In addition, Dangote highlighted the urgent need for job creation, noting population pressures and the need for infrastructure and power delivery to support economic activities.
