The National Police Council has unanimously confirmed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development to journalists shortly after the Council’s meeting at the State House, Abuja. The meeting, which lasted about 40 minutes, began around 2:15 pm following the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Council Chamber.
The gathering was held in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which require the Police Council to formally consider and endorse the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police before the nomination is transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.
In an earlier statement announcing the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, the Presidency had disclosed that the Council would be convened to deliberate on Disu’s appointment. Onanuga had stated that after the Council’s consideration, Disu’s name would be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation in line with the law.
The Police Council, chaired by the President, comprises the 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police.
Those who attended Monday’s meeting included Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack. Governors of Enugu, Nasarawa, Ogun, Kwara, Plateau, Ondo and Lagos states were also present, alongside the Deputy Governor of Kogi State and the Ministers of the Federal Capital Territory, Police Affairs and Interior.
Disu, 59, had been serving in an acting capacity since his appointment last Wednesday following Egbetokun’s exit. Although Egbetokun officially cited “family issues” in his resignation letter, reports indicated that he was summoned to the Presidential Villa and informed that he had to step down prior to his resignation.
