Former United States Vice President Kamala Harris has strongly criticised recent military action against Iran, saying that President Donald Trump is dragging the United States into a war that the American people do not want.
In a statement released on Saturday, Harris condemned the joint strikes launched by the U.S. and Israel — which President Trump has said were aimed at disabling Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure — calling the operation a “dangerous and unnecessary gamble” that threatens American lives and regional stability.
“Donald Trump is dragging the United States into a war the American people do not want,” Harris said. “Let me be clear: I am opposed to a regime-change war in Iran, and our troops are being put in harm’s way for the sake of Trump’s war of choice.”
She characterised the strikes as reckless and argued that military escalation is not the right way to address concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “This is a dangerous and unnecessary gamble with American lives that also jeopardises stability in the region and our standing in the world,” Harris added.
Harris noted that while the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear programme is serious, acting without clear objectives and broad support from the American public undermines U.S. credibility and risks American casualties.
The former vice president also accused Trump of breaking his own campaign promises to avoid foreign wars. “During the campaign, Donald Trump promised to end wars rather than start them. It was a lie,” she said, referencing previous assertions by Trump about having already subdued Iran’s nuclear programme, which she called “another lie.”
Harris urged the U.S. Congress to assert its constitutional authority by checking the president’s war powers and preventing further escalation of the conflict without proper legislative oversight.
