The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is poised to issue a decisive ruling on Monday, February 16, 2026, on a petition lodged by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) challenging the eligibility of several players fielded by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) during their 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoff final confrontation. Millions of Nigerian fans are anxiously awaiting the verdict, which could significantly affect the Super Eagles’ qualification fate for the global tournament.
Nigeria’s qualification campaign suffered a setback after a tense playoff final in November 2025 against DR Congo, which ended in a 1–1 draw before DR Congo won 4–3 on penalties to secure Africa’s slot in the intercontinental playoff. The NFF subsequently submitted a formal petition to FIFA alleging that up to six DR Congo players were ineligible to feature in the match due to recent changes in national allegiance, contrary to eligibility requirements.
The federation contends that the DR Congo Football Association may have provided misleading documentation regarding player nationality, enabling them to be cleared by FIFA despite potential conflicts with domestic nationality laws. However, critics point out that FIFA typically bases eligibility on internationally recognised documentation, such as valid passports, rather than domestic statutes, making the outcome uncertain.
What Nigeria Stands to Gain
A ruling in Nigeria’s favour could see the Super Eagles reinstated into the World Cup qualification process, granting them a spot in the six team intercontinental play off scheduled for March in Mexico. Success there would secure one of the remaining African places at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, cohosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
NFF officials, including Secretary General Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, have expressed confidence in the federation’s case, asserting that the petition was submitted in good faith and supported by legal arguments regarding eligibility documentation. Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi also voiced optimism, saying fans are hopeful for a positive outcome.
