The Delta State Government has approved the construction of 25 Police Divisional Headquarters across the state’s local government areas, alongside a Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base, as part of preparations for the anticipated establishment of state police in Nigeria.
The decision was announced following a meeting of the State Executive Council presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the security projects were approved to strengthen policing operations and improve safety across communities in the state.
Aniagwu explained that the government approved the construction of a Nigeria Police Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base to reinforce security architecture and support the operations of security agencies in Delta State.
He further disclosed that the council also approved the construction of Police Divisional Headquarters in all 25 local government areas of the state, noting that the initiative is aimed at positioning Delta State ahead of the Federal Government’s proposed policy on the establishment of state police.
According to him, the move demonstrates the Oborevwori administration’s commitment to proactive security planning and safeguarding lives and property.
The approvals were part of a broader decision by the State Executive Council to undertake major infrastructure projects worth over ₦400 billion, covering road construction, rehabilitation, and upgrading of critical infrastructure across the state.
Aniagwu noted that the projects will cut across several local government areas including Warri South, Warri South-West, Udu, Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Ethiope East, Ethiope West, Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North-East, Ika South, Ndokwa West, Ndokwa East, Bomadi, Burutu, Isoko North, and Isoko South.
He added that the infrastructure drive is designed to improve transportation, enhance security, boost economic activities, and strengthen connectivity among communities across Delta State.
The state government said the projects align with its broader development agenda aimed at accelerating growth and improving the quality of life for residents.
