Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), becoming the ninth opposition governor to join the ruling party in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
In a statewide broadcast on Friday, Fintiri said members of his cabinet and a significant number of members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa accompanied him in the move to the APC. He explained that the decision was made in the interest of accelerating development and delivering dividends of governance to the people of Adamawa.
“The move to the APC is driven by the desire to fast-track development and act in the best interest of the people of Adamawa State,” the governor stated.
Fintiri’s defection further strengthens the APC’s political footprint across the federation, following a string of opposition governors who have crossed over to the ruling party in recent months.
Who Might Be Next to Join the APC?
With Fintiri’s defection, political watchers are closely eyeing other opposition governors whose alignment could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. Among the names being speculated are:
- Bala Mohammed (Bauchi State) – A respected figure with national clout whose political decisions could influence northern political dynamics.
- Dauda Lawal (Zamfara State) – Whose governance challenges and alignment with federal priorities make him a name to watch.
- Alex Otti (Abia State) – A rising political star in the South East whose next move could shift regional alliances.
- Seyi Makinde (Oyo State) – With strong grassroots support and strategic relevance in the Southwest, his decision will be closely observed.
- Charles Soludo (Anambra State) – A popular political figure whose defection would send major ripples across South East politics.
