Popular Nigerian media personality, Toke Makinwa, has ignited widespread debate after revealing that she no longer pays tithes, saying many churches are already financially strong and her money can make more impact elsewhere.
Makinwa made the revelation during a recent interview on WithChude, noting she now prefers to channel her resources toward humanitarian causes, particularly helping vulnerable people who cannot afford medical care.
“I stopped paying tithe because all the churches I know are rich. I would rather go to hospitals and pay all the bills for the maternity ward. Churches already have money, let’s help other people that they can’t reach,” she said.
Her comments quickly triggered mixed reactions online. While some praised her for prioritising direct charity and supporting healthcare for the needy, others criticised her stance, arguing that tithing is a spiritual commitment that should not depend on the perceived wealth of religious institutions.
The statement has revived ongoing conversations in Nigeria about church wealth, transparency, and whether charitable giving outside religious structures should complement or replace traditional tithing practices.
