Nigerian actress, Scarlet Gomez, has opened up about the emotional toll of portraying her lead character in the hit television series Wura, revealing that therapy played a crucial role in helping her recover from the intense role.
Gomez, who plays the powerful and often ruthless Wura Adeleke, disclosed that embodying such a complex and villainous character affected her deeply, making it necessary to seek professional help to separate herself from the role.
Speaking during a virtual press briefing attended by journalists, the actress credited therapy and the support of her family and friends for helping her stay grounded.
“How I strike a balance… therapy and family. I’m grateful that I have the right support system around me to help me stay grounded,” she said.
She acknowledged that the role significantly boosted her visibility in the entertainment industry but noted that it came with emotional challenges.
“It put me out there, and I am grateful for it. ‘Wura’ made people pay attention,” she added.
Despite the success of the series, Gomez said she is intentional about avoiding typecasting, revealing that she has turned down roles similar to Wura to preserve her versatility as an actress.
“I am not the type to put myself in a box. Even when they try to bring characters similar to Wura, I deliberately turn them down because I don’t want to replicate what I’ve already done,” she explained.
As anticipation builds for the fourth season of the series, set to premiere on March 30, Gomez hinted that viewers will see a different side of her character.
According to her, the new season will explore a more emotional and vulnerable dimension of Wura Adeleke, marking a shift from the previously dominant and seemingly untouchable persona.
“Now she becomes more emotional, more vulnerable. People will see her in situations they’ve never seen before. She feels more human now,” Gomez said.
The actress also emphasised the broader impact of the show, noting that Wura demonstrates the potential of female-led productions to succeed in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
The series continues to enjoy strong viewership and is scheduled to air nightly with over 100 episodes in its upcoming season.
