Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has warned Arsenal that Manchester City will hold a crucial mental advantage in the Premier League title race, insisting Pep Guardiola’s side are better equipped to handle pressure in decisive moments.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s high-stakes clash at the Etihad Stadium, Rooney said City’s experience of winning major trophies under Pep Guardiola gives them the composure needed in tight situations—something he believes Arsenal may struggle to match.
“City will be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players,” Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show. “When you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking, ‘Where’s the next goal or win coming from?’ That negative mindset can really affect performance.”
City head into the clash in strong form after a dominant 3-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, a result that has intensified the pressure on league leaders Arsenal. Guardiola’s side now sit six points behind Arsenal with a game in hand—Sunday’s showdown.
Despite their recent surge, Arsenal have faced setbacks, including a defeat to AFC Bournemouth, raising concerns about their consistency as the title race enters a critical phase.
Rooney described the encounter as a potential “title decider,” suggesting the outcome could shape the destiny of the Premier League trophy. While he noted that a draw might still benefit Arsenal, he stressed that Mikel Arteta’s men must adopt a disciplined and resilient approach to contain City’s attacking threat.
“They have to do anything to stop City winning,” Rooney added. “Whether the fans like that type of football or not, they need to be strong enough defensively and stop City from scoring.”
